Animatic feedback

Animatic storyboard feedback

After we completed out anamatic we thought it would be a good idea to get some feedback on it. The way we went about this was by asking people what the thought of it and how, in there opinion we could improve.

  • Storylines good but make whats happening  clearer
  • Use a bigger variety of shots
  • Make sure that it will  show movement, develop pace.
  • The idea of the backwards video is a great concept
  • Range of shot types and editing transitions
  • The storyline seems to fit with the pace and content for genre
  • The amimatics are an effective and good length

Rough Cut Feedback

  • Quick flashes of Jo’s face work well, but different angles of her face would look better
  •  Make sure cutsare in time with the music.
  • At times, shots are too long, cut them down and add more variety.
  • Use more variety of shots to make sure it doesn’t look like the same shots are being used over.
  • Make it clearer what’s happening during the story line.
  • At the end intersperse more footage of the band within the storyline, it’s too long a block of footage of just the storyline.
  • During some parts shot at night it’s too dark to see what’s going on, cut these parts out.
  • Make sure lip synching is lined up properly.
  • Show more of Jo’s dancing than just the small part in the middle to intersperse it better within the rest of the performance.
  • Have Jo playing around with the location and props more [e.g. playing with the rope etc.]
  • Get a better variety of angles.

Shooting experience

On the day of shooting, the first location that had to be set up was underneath the school’s stage for the performancr aspect of the video. The first thing we had to do was clean out the underneath and source out the drum kit and take it over. This would have been a lot easier if not for the fact racheal had decided to break her leg (extremely inconvenient ). Once Jo had arrived, she put on her costume and make up and we listened to the song a couple of times in order to get in the right mood! Jo also went through the lyrics a few times. One thing that I would definitely make sure when shooting again, would be to the the music on an actualy CD. I used an Iphone, which turned out to be quite tinny and too quiet over the sound of the drumming. I felt shooting went quite well, however, looking back on my footage I realised that I’d filmed the same few lines too often and was lacking in a few other lines from later on in the song. Next time I film I would make sure to have sufficient footage of all the lyrics and then extra, to make sure I have enough footage to work with. The next bit we had to film was the story line with Jess. We planned for her to come round to my house, where the most of the filming would be done, for five. We started filming in the bed room. Despite having a storyboard, filming was still quite difficult as the story board went in reverse, where as we decided to film in a chronological order in terms of the nights events. So when we started, Jess’ character was just waking up, this part would actually end up in the lastfew secinds of the music video. After starting off the filming, we then had Jess go in to get her make up for the majority of the video. We had a friend do her make up with lots of black eyeliner, big lashes, very trashy. He costume was also in lines of trashiness, a short dress with fishnet tights and big black heels. I found shooting this part of the music video really fun as it involved re-creating a proper night out. I found we we’re pretty precise with what needed filming and we made sure that we filmed most of it a couple of times from a few different angles which really helped when it came to the editing process. Overall, we only needed to shoot the one time and ended up with enough footage to finish of the music video, which was very helpful! Jess, Jo and everyone else who helped and peformed in the music video were fantastic, and I was so grateful to everyone that helped out! I was happy with my initial filming experience, and found it easy to figure out what else needed to be filmed after the first editing sessions.

Digi Pack

For the DigiPak cover we used a variety of different shots taken from the music video, blending the venue of performance and the story line. We chose to use Jess rather than Jo to show the mixing of these two parts of the video. The front cover of the Digipak shows Jess crashed out against the wall, and I think this particularly shows the feel of the song and the video. The trashy outfit and run down background work well together to create an interesting shot. We used bright pink for the title of both the band and the track as this both stands out and also references to the bands previous CD covers, in which a lot of neon text is used over the pictures.

The back cover of the Digipak is a picture of the exact same spot, flipped and with a large speaker in place of Jess. I think this works really well as it’s replacing Jess, who’s reference to the storyline of the video with a speaker, reference to the performance part of the video. The back has the barcode, lisensing and record company logos, creating a realistic digipak.

The inside flap simply shows a picture of another area of the room. We chose to use a slightly more busy and visually interesting photo as this section would be void of text. It allows fans of the band to see areas of the set up they they may not have caught in the music video itself.

The other two flaps involve a close up of the back cover photo, with lyrics included, running over the two sides. We chose to put in the lyrics as fans often search them anyway, having the official lyrics in the Digipak pays homage to the fans and allows everyone to read what the song is really about.

Finally, the inside and CD section is a close up of Jess, the CD and casing of the CD is the same photo, so when the CD is taken out of the case, you are not left with just a blank space.

Velvet revolver

Velvet revolver

For this task we had to create a video using our own montage footage and include footage of a live performance of velvet revolvers just sixteen, that we found on you tube, this was different to what we had done before because we had to incorporate someone elses footage and we didn’t have a step to step guide of what to film like we did when we were making the ice ice baby video.

Ice Ice Baby!

Ice ice baby evaluation-

Editing the footage to ice ice was my first attempt at editing a music video and it didnt come easy, i  found it completely different to previous editing I had done before. Whilst I found it difficult I also found it extremely beneficial as it gave me some idea of the potential problems I could come into contact with when filming my final piece. Mainly the fact that whilst yes you shouldn’t worry about filming to much footage you should make sure that you film stuff for your video and not to leave the camera rolling as that’s what we did and we ended up with about 20 minutes of footage of the floor/wall and it was so painful to editing out all the excess, this is something I will defiantly keeping mind when I film my final project cause I certainly done want to go through that again

Letter to Musician

Dear whom it may concern,

I am you to writing to request your permission to use the track photosynthesis by Frank Turner as part of my A level media coursework. I’m currently studying at Coopers Company and Coborn school in Upminster Essex. The task we have been set is to create a video to a music video to a song of our choice and I hope if you give me permission I wish to do it to the pre mentioned song. If you do grant me permission the track would be kept as it is and then put to my video and distributed on you tube.

I hope you consider this and will be more than happy to agree to any terms and conditions you deem necessary and I will of course give you full credit where necessary

Yours sincerely

Anna Chapman
